Background and purpose : In the field of occupational therapy, there are more females than males working as therapists.
Occupational therapy theories and concepts have originated from minorities, and it is only in recent years that a call for diversity is emerging. Therefore the purpose of this study is to examine the lived experience of male occupational therapists working in a setting that consists mostly of female occupational therapists.
Method : Semi-structured interview with 3 therapists were conducted where the data were subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis.
Results : Three main themes were derived from the interview analysis: 1) difference in life experience, 2) expectation of a
male, and 3) feminine atmosphere.
Conclusion : The experiences of male occupational therapists may be considered for assignment of clients to therapists, and there may be a room for modification in the occupational therapy working environment for better service provision.
